TUK Lecturer Brutally Hacked to Death in Homa Bay Land Dispute: Family Demands Justice

Shock and sorrow have engulfed Kakrigu village in Mbita, Homa Bay County, after Tom Odhiambo, a respected professor at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), was hacked to death on Tuesday, September 30. The 55-year-old scholar was reportedly attacked by two young men during a land demarcation visit.

“He Was Just Trying to Solve a Dispute”—Family Devastated by Sudden Loss

Odhiambo had traveled with his elderly father to the disputed land to meet a local chief and a surveyor. They hoped to resolve a long-standing boundary conflict. Witnesses said the land had been encroached upon, prompting Odhiambo to seek official intervention.

“He was preparing to meet the chief when the attackers struck,” a shaken villager recounted. “They hacked him and fled, leaving his father bleeding,” another added.

The professor died instantly from deep head injuries. His father was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

“This Is Barbaric”—Local Leaders Condemn the Killing

Mbita Deputy Sub-County Commissioner Peter Mutiso confirmed the gruesome details.

“Odhiambo sustained severe head injuries. He bled excessively and died on the spot,” Mutiso stated.

Police arrived shortly after the attack. They moved the body to Kirindo Mortuary and launched investigations. The suspects remain at large.

Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo condemned the murder and called for swift justice.

“The murder of the professor is unfortunate. Violence never solves disputes,” she said. “May the killers and anyone who aided them be brought to book,” she added.

“He Was a Brilliant Mind”—Academic Community Mourns a Fallen Scholar

Until his death, Odhiambo served as Director of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at TUK. His colleagues described him as a brilliant educator and a humble leader.

“He was a pillar in our department. His death is a huge loss,” a fellow lecturer shared.

Students and staff gathered at the university to mourn and honor his legacy.

“We Demand Justice”—Family and Community Call for Accountability

Odhiambo’s family is devastated. They are demanding answers and protection from further violence.

“We want justice. We want peace. We want safety,” a relative cried.
