Senior NIS Officer Found Dead at Nyamira Home as Police Launch Investigation
The deceased, identified as David Kipkoech Kosgey, 56, was serving as the Head of County Intelligence Coordination in Nyamira County at the time of his death. His body was discovered on Friday, June 5, after colleagues became concerned when he failed to report for official duties and could not be reached through his phone.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the county’s security establishment, with detectives now working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
The officers later proceeded to his residence in Nyamira town, where they found the house locked from the inside. After several unsuccessful attempts to get a response, they made the decision to force entry into the house.

Inside, they found the senior intelligence officer lying motionless.
Nyamira County Commissioner Benson Leparimorijo confirmed the incident, stating that the body was discovered at around midday following heightened concern among colleagues and security officers.
“The officer was expected to travel for official duties, but when efforts to reach him failed, officers went to his residence. The house was locked from the inside, forcing them to break the door in order to gain access,” Leparimorijo said.
Sources familiar with the investigation said preliminary observations suggested there may have been signs of a struggle inside the residence, although detectives have not officially confirmed what may have transpired before the officer’s death.
The house has since been sealed off and designated a crime scene as investigators continue gathering information.
Authorities have remained cautious about drawing conclusions before the completion of a postmortem examination and forensic analysis.
“At this stage, investigations are ongoing, and it would be premature to speculate on the cause of death before all forensic procedures are completed,” a police source involved in the investigation said.

The results of the examination are likely to play a critical role in helping detectives determine whether the death resulted from natural causes, a medical condition, or possible foul play.
The death of such a senior intelligence officer has inevitably attracted public attention, particularly given the sensitive nature of his role within the country’s security apparatus.
As Head of County Intelligence Coordination, Kosgey was responsible for overseeing intelligence gathering and coordination efforts within Nyamira County, making him one of the most senior security officials in the region.
By Friday evening, no arrests had been made in connection with the incident, and investigators had yet to announce any suspects or persons of interest.
Police have appealed for patience as investigations continue, assuring the public that all possible leads are being pursued.

With the residence now under forensic examination and a postmortem expected in the coming days, authorities hope the findings will provide crucial answers regarding the final moments of the veteran intelligence officer and help unravel the mystery surrounding his sudden death.
