Chaos at Narok High Court as Residents Attempt to Free Murder Suspect
Tension gripped Narok Town on Tuesday after dramatic scenes unfolded at the High Court when a crowd of residents allegedly attempted to free a murder suspect from lawful custody, triggering violent confrontations with security officers and temporarily disrupting court operations.
The incident, which drew significant attention from residents and authorities alike, occurred at the Narok High Court premises where Matunke Mayone, a suspect facing a murder charge linked to a fatal land dispute in Maji Moto, had been presented before the court.
Witnesses reported that shortly after court proceedings commenced, dozens of residents began gathering around the courthouse, with the crowd rapidly swelling as emotions surrounding the case intensified. The group allegedly sought to gain access to the court compound and interfere with the suspect’s detention, prompting an immediate response from police officers and prison wardens stationed at the facility.
According to eyewitness accounts, the situation quickly escalated as security personnel attempted to prevent demonstrators from breaching the court’s perimeter. Officers were forced to deploy teargas and fire warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd and restore order around the premises.

Several police vehicles were seen arriving at the scene to reinforce security, while additional officers were deployed around strategic locations to prevent further disturbances and ensure the safety of court personnel, judicial officers, and members of the public.
Despite the disruption, judicial proceedings continued under heightened security measures.
The court indicated that it was awaiting confirmation regarding the suspect’s mental assessment before proceeding with the next stage of the case.
The dramatic events have once again drawn attention to longstanding land disputes in parts of Narok County, particularly in Maji Moto, where tensions over land ownership and usage rights have persisted for years.
The murder case at the center of the latest unrest is reportedly linked to one such dispute, highlighting the deep divisions that have emerged within sections of the local community over land-related matters.

Security analysts note that land conflicts remain among the most sensitive issues in Narok and neighboring regions, often generating strong emotions and occasionally leading to violent confrontations.
In recent months, government officials have repeatedly intervened in an effort to ease tensions and prevent further escalation.
Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia previously held meetings with community leaders and residents in Maji Moto following reports of heightened tensions arising from unresolved land ownership disputes.
Authorities have consistently appealed for calm while encouraging affected parties to pursue legal channels in resolving disagreements rather than resorting to violence.
The latest court disturbance also comes against the backdrop of previous conflicts in the county. In 2025, a disputed 6,500-acre parcel of land in Ang’ata Barikoi, Kilgoris, became the center of a heated standoff involving allegations of irregular land transactions and fears among residents that ancestral land could be lost.
The resulting tensions prompted heightened security operations and intensified calls for government intervention.
As part of efforts to restore order, sections of Maji Moto were previously designated as security-disturbed areas following a series of violent incidents linked to land disputes.
Tuesday’s unrest is likely to renew concerns over the effectiveness of conflict resolution mechanisms in addressing longstanding land grievances in the region.

Meanwhile, local leaders have urged residents to remain calm and allow the judicial process to proceed without interference, emphasizing that justice can only be achieved through lawful means and respect for court proceedings.
