Kimani Ichung’wah Challenges Catholic Church Over KSh 2.6M Refund

Kajiado, Kenya – National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has faulted the Catholic Church for not refunding KSh 2.6 million donated by President William Ruto. This disagreement highlights growing tensions between the church and the state over political contributions.

Church Reiterates Readiness to Return Donations

On Saturday, November 30, Nairobi Catholic Archbishop Philip Anyolo affirmed the church’s willingness to return Ruto and Sakaja’s contributions totaling KSh 5.8 million.

“We were ready and returned everything required. This isn’t the first time, and we’ll continue doing so,” Anyolo stated. He clarified the church’s decision aligns with its directives to maintain neutrality and avoid controversy.

Ichung’wah Insists Church Hasn’t Refunded Ruto’s Money

On December 1, Ichung’wah, speaking in Kajiado, said Ruto’s KSh 2.6 million donation to Soweto Catholic Church remains unreturned. He criticized the church for rejecting leaders’ contributions, stressing their spiritual significance.

“When leaders contribute, we’re giving back to God. I urge church leaders to respect elected officials, chosen by God to serve Kenyans,” Ichung’wah declared. He also urged the church to avoid public spats with political figures, warning such disputes harm its image and the nation.

Ruto Advocates for Peace Between Church and State

Meanwhile, President Ruto addressed an interdenominational service in Kimana, Kajiado South, calling for unity between religious and state leaders. He emphasized the need to set aside differences to promote national progress.

“We must prioritize peace and harmony. Religious and political leaders must collaborate to move Kenya forward,” Ruto urged.

The controversy over political donations has sparked debate on the church’s role in politics. Kenyans remain divided, with some supporting the church’s stand and others criticizing its rejection of contributions from leaders.
