Murkomen, Chirchir Make Leadership Appointments to NTSA, KWS in Fresh Shake-up

Several Cabinet secretaries have made new appointments and reappointments to key state agencies, bringing fresh leadership changes to institutions responsible for transport safety, wildlife conservation, intelligence oversight, public procurement and other government functions.

The latest changes include appointments to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Intelligence Service Complaints Board and Public Procurement Regulatory Board.

The appointments take effect as government agencies prepare to implement their mandates under new or renewed leadership.

Chirchir Appoints New NTSA Board Member

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir appointed Stephen Mutai as a member of the NTSA Board.

Mutai will serve for three years, with his appointment taking effect on August 21, 2026.

The NTSA Board plays an important role in overseeing policies linked to road safety, vehicle regulation, driver licensing and public transport operations.

The appointment comes as the transport sector continues to face pressure over road accidents, commercial vehicle compliance and the enforcement of traffic safety regulations.

Miano Renews KWS Director-General

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano also renewed the appointment of Professor Erastus Mutembei Kanga as Director-General of the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Kanga will serve for another three years at the agency responsible for managing and protecting Kenya’s wildlife and national parks.

His continued tenure comes as KWS handles challenges including wildlife conservation, human-wildlife conflict, poaching prevention and the management of protected areas.

The renewed appointment is expected to provide continuity in the implementation of wildlife conservation programmes.

Murkomen Names Intelligence Complaints Board Team

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen appointed a new leadership team to the Intelligence Service Complaints Board.

Joseph Gitonga Riungu was appointed Chairperson of the board for a three-year term.

He will serve alongside Naema Ibrahim Somo, Lawrence Nyalle, businessman and former Homa Bay gubernatorial aspirant Samwel Owino Wakiaga, and Charity Kagwi Ndung’u.

The board is responsible for handling complaints relating to the conduct of members of Kenya’s intelligence services.

Its work is therefore closely linked to oversight, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights when dealing with intelligence agencies.

Treasury Renews Procurement Board Members

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi also reappointed four members of the Public Procurement Regulatory Board.

The officials are Patrick Kimemia Ndirangu, Lucy Chepkemoi, Amos Simiyu Makokha and Ali Mohamed Haji.

They will serve for another three years, with their renewed terms also beginning on August 21.

The Public Procurement Regulatory Board plays a key role in overseeing public procurement and promoting compliance with government procurement laws and regulations.

More State Agencies Receive New Leaders

The latest changes extend beyond NTSA, KWS and the intelligence complaints board.

Five new members have been appointed to the Railway Development Levy Fund Board, while Professor Wanyama Musiambo has been reappointed Chairperson of the Board of Governors of Bukura Agricultural College for another three years.

Other government institutions affected by the latest appointments include the Protective Security Wages Council, National Labour Board, Pest Control Products Board, Technopolis Development Authority and Street Families Rehabilitation Trust Fund.

The appointments reflect continued changes in the leadership of state agencies as the government seeks to strengthen oversight and service delivery across different sectors.

With several of the appointments taking effect immediately, the newly appointed and reappointed officials are expected to work with their respective boards and government departments to advance their institutions’ mandates.

The changes also come at a time when government agencies face increased scrutiny over accountability, efficiency and delivery of public services.

The new leadership teams will therefore be expected to demonstrate effective governance while implementing policies in their respective sectors.
