Prime Suspect In Shocking KNH Murder To Undergo Mental Assessment As Court Demands Hospital Records

In a chilling turn of events, a Kibera court has ordered Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and Nairobi Women’s Hospital to submit full medical records of a murder suspect linked to the brutal killing of a patient inside KNH.

On Monday, July 21, the main suspect, identified only as Kalombotole, was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutahi following the mysterious death of 40-year-old Gilbert Kinyua, who was murdered in Ward 7C at KNH on the night of February 6–7.

“Let both Kenyatta National Hospital and Nairobi Women’s Hospital submit detailed medical records by Thursday, July 24,” ordered Magistrate Mutahi.

Prosecution Seeks Extended Detention

The prosecution urged the court to allow them to detain the suspect for an additional 21 days, citing security concerns and the suspect’s lack of a fixed residence.

“We are requesting for 21 days as the respondent has been a patient at KNH and currently has no place of abode,” said the ODPP.
“If released, he is likely to abscond, and we will not be able to trace him.”

Kalombotole is believed to have lived within the hospital since 2022 and allegedly committed the crime while posing as a patient. Authorities suspect he could be connected to other crimes at the facility.

Mental State Under Scrutiny

The prosecution also raised concern over the suspect’s mental health, pushing for a full mental assessment.

“We are also apprehensive of his mental state, as he is believed to have been involved in several incidents at Kenyatta National Hospital,” added the prosecution.
“We require a secure facility to hold him, considering he has been identified as a person of interest in two murder cases.”

According to the police, the murder of Gilbert Kinyua appeared well-calculated. Investigators believe that if released, the suspect could interfere with the probe or intimidate witnesses.

Court’s Next Move

The magistrate did not immediately rule on the request for extended detention. Instead, she insisted that a decision would be made after reviewing the medical records from the two hospitals.

“The court will issue further directions once the medical records are presented,” she stated.

As investigations continue, the case has sent shockwaves across the country, raising questions about hospital safety and how a suspected killer managed to operate undetected inside one of Kenya’s largest public hospitals.
