Gilbert Kinyua Murder: KNH Denies CCTV Footage of Any Intruder
The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has denied claims that there is CCTV footage showing an outsider entering or leaving the ward where Gilbert Kinyua was murdered. Acting CEO William Sigilai dismissed reports that the patient sharing the ward with Kinyua was mentally ill.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, February 7, Sigilai clarified that Ward 7B, where the crime occurred, is strictly for patients with neurological conditions, not mental disorders.
“Kinyua was admitted to Ward 7B, which specializes in managing nervous system disorders. We wish to clarify that this ward is not designated for mental health conditions, as has been erroneously reported,” Sigilai stated.
Kinyua’s Medical Condition and Admission to KNH
Kinyua was referred to KNH from St. Mary’s Hospital, Lang’ata, on December 11, 2024. He had been diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder that caused severe muscle weakness, leaving him dependent on total nursing care, including tube feeding.
Hospital officials confirmed that Kinyua’s condition had been stable a day before his tragic death.
No CCTV Footage Capturing the Murderer
KNH has confirmed that the crime took place, and a knife, believed to be the weapon, was recovered. However, Sigilai stated that there is no CCTV footage showing an outsider committing the murder.
“Let me state that at this point in time, we do not have evidence that anybody walked in and committed the said crime. However, we know for a fact that the patient was murdered in the ward. We have handed over the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI),” Sigilai said.
The CEO reassured the public that KNH has an elaborate security system, including CCTV cameras in common areas. Additionally, the hospital collaborates closely with officers from the National Police Service, who are stationed within the facility.
Psychological Support for the Family
Following the brutal murder, KNH swiftly informed Kinyua’s family and mobilized a team of psychologists and counselors to provide support.
“A team of psychologists and counselors was mobilized to support the family and to break the sad news. Recognizing the grief and trauma experienced, a 24-hour helpline has been established for ongoing psychological assistance,” Sigilai added.
KNH Enhances Security Measures
In response to the murder, KNH has intensified security measures across the hospital to ensure the safety of its over 1,800 patients, staff, and visitors.
