U.S. Warns of Flight Cancellations, Airspace Closures and Attacks on Interests

The United States has issued a fresh worldwide security warning to Americans amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, cautioning that Iran and groups supportive of Tehran could target US interests in different parts of the world.

The US Department of State issued the warning as regional hostilities continued to affect travel, aviation and security. Americans currently in the Middle East have been advised to exercise increased caution and prepare for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions.

The department also urged Americans outside the region to reconsider travel to and through the Middle East and to monitor information from airlines and airports before travelling.

The warning extends beyond the Middle East, with the State Department saying US diplomatic facilities and other American-linked locations have previously been targeted.

“U.S. diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including U.S. businesses and other institutions.”

The advisory does not identify Kenya as a specific target. However, Kenya hosts US diplomatic, commercial and security interests, meaning American citizens and institutions in the country are among those covered by the worldwide caution.

The State Department’s warning comes against a backdrop of continuing tensions involving Iran and the United States and attacks involving missiles and drones across parts of the Middle East.

The security situation has also affected commercial aviation. The US government has warned that travellers should be prepared for changes to flight schedules and temporary restrictions on airspace as airlines respond to developments in the region.

Americans travelling through affected areas have been advised to confirm their flight status directly with airlines and monitor airport announcements.

The US has also issued individual travel warnings for several Middle Eastern countries. Saudi Arabia, for example, is currently under a Level 3 advisory, with Washington citing risks associated with Iranian missile and drone attacks, armed conflict and terrorism.

Other countries in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Qatar, have also faced heightened travel warnings linked to the wider security situation and potential disruption to commercial flights.

The warning has implications for international businesses and organisations with operations in the region because prolonged disruptions could affect air travel, shipping, supply chains and other commercial activities.

The developments have also raised concerns over maritime security. Kenya recently condemned missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and called for an end to hostilities.

In a statement issued on Friday, September 18, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs expressed concern over threats to commercial shipping and freedom of navigation through the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz.

“We call for unimpeded maritime waterways, and the cessation of attacks against merchant and commercial vessels. Kenya remains committed to working with the international community to safeguard maritime security, protect legitimate trade, and promote international peace and stability.”

The Kenyan government said disruptions to major maritime routes could have wider consequences for international trade, economic stability and energy security.

For Americans abroad, the US State Department has urged continued monitoring of official security updates and instructions from local authorities. The department also recommends that citizens travelling internationally enrol in its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive alerts from US embassies and consulates.

The latest warning does not set a blanket travel restriction for every country outside the Middle East. Instead, it reflects Washington’s assessment that the security environment remains fluid and that developments in the regional conflict could have consequences beyond the immediate area.
