Kitutu Central Police Commander Kazungu Charo Dies After Prolonged Illness
According to a police report filed at Nyanchwa Police Station, the senior officer died after his health deteriorated late Thursday night, April 16. He was rushed to Mediforte Hospital in the early hours of Friday morning but succumbed while receiving treatment.
“He fell ill during the night and was taken to hospital at around 5am, where he later passed on,” a police report indicated, confirming the timeline of events leading to his death.

During that period, he is said to have been in and out of hospital, undergoing multiple blood transfusions while receiving treatment for severe pelvic and back pain.
“The commander had been unwell for months and required frequent medical attention,” a source privy to the matter stated, highlighting the extent of his health struggles prior to his death.
Following his passing, Charo’s body was moved to the mortuary at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, where it awaits a postmortem examination. Authorities confirmed that funeral arrangements are underway, with plans to transport his remains to Kilifi County, his home area, for burial.
The NPS has since notified the officer’s family and assured them of full support during this period, noting that preparations are being made to accord him a dignified send-off in recognition of his service.
Charo’s death has been described by colleagues as a significant loss to the police service, particularly within the Kitutu Central sub-county, where he was actively involved in coordinating security operations.

“This is a huge loss to the service. He was a dedicated officer who served with commitment,” a colleague noted, reflecting the sentiments shared within the security fraternity.
According to a report filed at Ekerenyo Police Station, the officer was discovered unresponsive inside a locked vehicle at Ikonge Market along the Nyamira–Kericho highway. Members of the public had raised the alarm after noticing the vehicle parked suspiciously for an extended period.
Responding officers, alongside detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), were forced to break into the vehicle, where they found the lifeless body of the officer lying on the front seat.
“The officers had to break the window to access the vehicle, where the body was discovered,” the report stated, adding that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The back-to-back incidents have intensified scrutiny over the welfare and health of officers within the police service, with calls growing for enhanced medical support systems and routine health monitoring.
As the NPS continues to grapple with the loss, attention now turns to honouring Charo’s legacy while addressing broader concerns surrounding the wellbeing of officers serving in demanding and high-risk environments.

The late commander’s passing not only leaves a gap in leadership within his jurisdiction but also underscores the human cost behind the uniform, as the country reflects on the sacrifices made by those tasked with maintaining law and order.
