Kenya Signs Deal With Idris Elba to Boost Creative Industry and Create Opportunities for Youth
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei announced the agreement after signing a Statement of Intent with Elba on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2026) in Antigua and Barbuda on Tuesday, November 3.

In announcing the development, Sing’Oei said the agreement would help create a pathway for Kenya to work more closely with Elba’s organisation in developing the creative economy.
“On the sidelines of #CHOGM2026 in Antigua and Barbuda, I signed a Statement of Intent on behalf of Kenya with Sir Idris Elba, Chairman of the Akuna Group, establishing a pathway for cooperation in the creative economy,” Sing’Oei said.
Kenya Targets Creative Economy Growth
According to the Principal Secretary, the agreement covers financing opportunities for content creators and ways of connecting African talent with investors and technology.
These areas are increasingly important to filmmakers, musicians, digital content creators and other creative professionals seeking to turn their skills into sustainable businesses.
“Our ambition is to connect Kenya’s extraordinary creative talent to technology, investment and opportunities across the Commonwealth, turning creativity into dignified work, scalable enterprise and national influence,” he stated.
The initiative is also expected to complement the government’s Talanta Hela programme, which seeks to identify, nurture and commercialise talent among young Kenyans.
If implemented as planned, the collaboration could provide creatives with additional opportunities to develop projects, attract funding and reach audiences beyond Kenya.

However, specific funding amounts, the number of beneficiaries and implementation timelines were not detailed in the announcement.
Partnership Brings Together Commonwealth Countries
The agreement falls under the Commonwealth Creative Economy Partnership, an initiative bringing together Kenya, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Barbados.
Kenya’s involvement could provide local creatives with opportunities to build professional networks and explore partnerships with international investors and technology companies.
The partnership programme is expected to be unveiled during the anticipated visit, although further details of the launch were not provided.
Idris Elba Engages African Creatives
The latest agreement follows a virtual meeting between Elba and Sing’Oei in September, during which they discussed challenges facing young African artists and creative entrepreneurs.
His Akuna Group has also been pursuing initiatives aimed at equipping African filmmakers with artificial intelligence skills.
In October, the organisation announced a training and mentorship programme developed in partnership with Google and Curious Refuge, an online AI filmmaking school.
The programme includes production funding for selected projects, with participating filmmakers retaining ownership of their work.
What the Deal Means for Kenyan Youth
The partnership places renewed attention on the potential of the creative industry to provide employment and business opportunities for young people.
The next stage will depend on how the agreement is implemented, the resources made available and the opportunities ultimately offered to local creatives.
