A storm is brewing within government circles after former State House Senior Adviser Moses Kuria publicly criticized Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura. The clash erupted following Mwaura’s radio interview on Inooro FM, where he admitted confusion over the Social Health Authority (SHA) and Affordable Housing deductions.

“He’s Confused About Basic Facts,” Kuria Fires Back

During the interview aired on Thursday, September 18, Mwaura struggled to explain the monthly deductions for SHA and housing. He also failed to clarify why Kenyans couldn’t use their housing levy contributions as deposits toward home ownership.

“I am not sure which deducts more money than the other,” Mwaura confessed. “I’ll have to consult because I do not want to feed you the wrong information,” he added.

Kuria, clearly unimpressed, responded with sharp criticism. He questioned Mwaura’s competence and demanded accountability.

“The Government Spokesman does not know how much the deductions for SHA and Housing Levy are,” Kuria stated. “He says he is confused about which is which,” he added.

Kuria Calls for a Second Interview

Kuria didn’t stop there. He urged radio host Nderitu Waihura to invite Mwaura back for a follow-up interview.

“I beseech my friend Nderitu Waihura to invite him again once he establishes exactly how much Kenyans are being deducted,” Kuria said.

His remarks sparked public debate, with many Kenyans expressing frustration over the lack of clarity surrounding the two levies.

Ruto’s Signature Projects Under Fire

Both SHA and the Affordable Housing program are flagship initiatives under President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Since their launch, they’ve faced intense scrutiny from citizens and leaders alike.

Every month, the government deducts:

• 1.5% of gross salary for the Affordable Housing Levy
• 2.75% of gross salary for SHA, with a minimum of Ksh300

To access housing, Kenyans must register via the Boma Yangu portal or dial *832#. However, many still struggle to understand how their contributions translate into tangible benefits.

“We need transparency. These are our salaries, our futures,” said a Nairobi-based teacher.

Public Demands Clarity and Accountability

As the debate intensifies, Kenyans are calling for better communication and leadership. Many feel betrayed by officials who seem uninformed about policies affecting millions.

“If the spokesperson is confused, what about the rest of us?” asked a frustrated civil servant.
