Mombasa Raid Uncovers Ksh100 Million Counterfeit Cooking Oil Factory, Seven Arrested

A major counterfeit operation has been exposed in Mombasa. Seven suspects are now behind bars, while four others remain on the run. The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) revealed the shocking details following a Sunday raid at Shimanzi.

“We Have Arrested Seven People”

ACA Director of Enforcement Yusuf Ahmed confirmed the arrests.

“We have arrested seven people, and we are following leads that may lead to the arrest of four others,” he said.

The suspects had converted a yard—once used for ship sludge—into a fake cooking oil factory. They illegally used 13 local brands to process and package the counterfeit oil.

“Dirty Oil in Drums and Tankers”

During the raid, a multi-agency team including ACA and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers discovered disturbing evidence. They found 13 tankers used to smuggle oil, metallic drums filled with dirty oil, and crude processing structures.

“Samples of the oil were taken for testing to determine their safety,” Ahmed explained.

Receipts, invoices, and vouchers were also seized. These documents will help trace the owners and map out the distribution network.

“We’re Targeting Wholesalers Too”

ACA isn’t stopping at the factory. The agency is now pursuing wholesalers believed to have distributed the fake oil to unsuspecting consumers.

“We are collaborating with companies whose brands were used illegally to protect their patent rights,” Ahmed added.

This crackdown is part of a broader campaign to eliminate counterfeit goods that threaten public health and damage the economy.

“Kenyans Must Stay Alert”

Ahmed urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious products.

“We want Kenyans to be aware of the safety of the cooking oil they consume and report suspicious products,” he said.

The raid has sparked public concern. Many fear that counterfeit oil may have already reached local markets. Authorities are working swiftly to contain the damage and prevent further distribution.

“This Is About Public Health”

ACA emphasized that this operation is not just about enforcing the law—it’s about protecting lives. Counterfeit cooking oil poses serious health risks, and the agency is determined to stop it.
