IPOA Uncovers Shocking Details in Fatal Shooting by DCI Officer in Thika

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has revealed disturbing new details in the fatal shooting of two men by an off-duty DCI officer in Makongeni, Thika. The incident, which occurred early Sunday morning, has sparked outrage and demands for justice.

“He Shot Them in Front of Fellow Officers”

According to IPOA’s statement on Tuesday, the officer involved is attached to the DCI Headquarters Economic and Commercial Crimes Unit. The victims, Kennedy Ojuma and Stephen Mwendwa, were a boda boda rider and his passenger.

“It has come to our attention that the officer shot both victims in the presence of on-duty police officers,” IPOA stated.

The tragedy unfolded just 200 metres from Makongeni Police Station. At around 5:30am, the officer, driving an Audi, collided with the boda boda. An argument followed, and they agreed to head to the station to resolve the matter.

“He Was Agitated and Allegedly Drunk”

By 6:00am, traffic officers from Thika Police Station arrived. However, tensions escalated. IPOA reported that the DCI officer, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, became agitated.

“The officer drew his firearm and shot both the rider and the passenger,” IPOA confirmed.

On-duty officers immediately disarmed and detained him at Thika Police Station.

“We Are Collecting Every Piece of Evidence”

IPOA has launched a full investigation. So far, they’ve obtained OB extracts, duty rosters, and signals from both stations. Nine officers have already recorded statements.

“We are seeking custodial orders for 21 days to complete investigations,” IPOA said during the officer’s arraignment at Kiambu Law Courts.

The authority also plans to oversee autopsies, collect more witness statements, and conduct ballistic tests on the officer’s firearm. Additionally, they aim to retrieve CCTV footage from the area.

“The Community Is Furious”

Following the shooting, fellow boda boda riders retaliated by torching the officer’s Audi. The victims’ bodies were taken to Thika General Kago Mortuary, where autopsies are expected soon.

IPOA emphasized that justice must be served. The community, still in shock, demands accountability.

“This incident highlights the urgent need for police oversight and accountability,” IPOA concluded.

As investigations continue, Kenyans are watching closely. The tragedy has reignited calls for reform and responsible policing.
