Governor Sakaja Urges Nairobians to Help Arrest Vandals in CBD Crackdown
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has issued a powerful call to action. On Monday, September 8, he urged residents to help stop criminals vandalizing city infrastructure.
“Institute Apprehension of Vandals”
During a press briefing, Sakaja made his stance clear.
“Vandalism of public infrastructure is against the law because that is infrastructure that has been placed there using your money,” he said.
He stressed that the county government has partnered with the DCI and National Police Service to boost security. However, he insisted that citizens must also act.
“We want to warn anyone vandalising power that they will face the full force of the law if caught,” Sakaja added.
Toll-Free Number Launched
To support this initiative, Sakaja announced a new toll-free number—988. Residents can now report criminal activity directly to the county government.

This move aims to empower citizens and reduce crime in the CBD. According to Sakaja, criminals have been sabotaging lighting infrastructure, making streets unsafe.
“When I took office, there were so many cases of crime in the city,” he said. “We worked with security agencies to ensure that order was restored, and we shall not allow it to go back there.”
Business Owners Must Step Up
Sakaja also addressed the business community. He revealed plans to meet building owners and discuss security upgrades.
“We shall have a meeting with all the building owners and deliberate on how they can put their CCTVs and lights outside their buildings,” he stated.
He emphasized that this practice is common in cities worldwide. Nairobi, he said, must follow suit.
Lighting Repairs Underway
Meanwhile, the county is working with Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) to fix and install more streetlights. These efforts target high-crime zones and aim to restore safety.
Warning to Boda Boda Operators
Sakaja didn’t stop there. He issued a stern warning to rogue boda boda operators.
“If you are found to be operating outside the designated areas, we shall apprehend you, and there is nothing you can do about it,” he warned.
He praised the majority of operators but urged them to weed out criminal elements.

“Many people working in the Boda boda sector are very good people,” Sakaja said. “But we would like to encourage them not to allow a few individuals to come and tarnish their reputation.”
