Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s impeachment storm has calmed after President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga intervened separately.

On Tuesday, Raila met Sakaja and ODM MCAs at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation. The tense closed-door talks lasted hours. Eventually, he persuaded them to suspend their impeachment push.

ODM Nairobi Chairperson George Aladwa later confirmed the breakthrough.

“We have deliberated for nearly four hours, and the MCAs have raised all their concerns. Nairobi leadership, as well as the party, has also resolved to drop the impending impeachment to allow us to correct the wrong,” Aladwa told reporters.

The Makadara MP stressed that ODM MCAs had agreed to give Sakaja one month to mend ties with the Assembly.

“We have agreed that the Governor should be allowed to serve the people of Nairobi. We have also asked him to consider all that was contested about him or us to move forward,” he added.

Sakaja Admits Mistakes

During the heated meeting, Sakaja reportedly acknowledged the accusations. He even apologised directly to the MCAs, a move that softened tempers.

Aladwa confirmed this.

“We have resolved that the concerns raised will be addressed within one month. This is to allow the governor time to concentrate on delivering services to the people of Nairobi,” he said.

Ruto’s Separate Call for Calm

Meanwhile, at State House Nairobi, President Ruto held a parallel meeting with UDA-allied MCAs. Sources revealed the Head of State firmly cautioned them against pursuing Sakaja’s ouster.

Both meetings ended with the same conclusion: suspend the impeachment.

Grievances That Sparked the Motion

The MCAs had gathered over 70 signatures from both ODM and UDA camps. To file an impeachment motion, they needed 82 out of 123 members.

Their frustrations were clear. They accused Sakaja of stalling bursary disbursements, delaying the Ward Development Fund, and abandoning campaign promises. They also claimed he ignored residents’ needs across wards.

But for now, the Governor has breathing space.

A City Waiting

The decision buys Sakaja one month. Nairobians, however, remain anxious. Will he deliver this time? Or will the storm return even stronger?

One thing is certain. Both Raila and Ruto’s intervention has spared Nairobi from another bruising political battle—at least for now.
