Nairobi: Plans to Impeach Sakaja Gain Momentum as 70 MCAs Sign Ouster Motion

Governor Johnson Sakaja is on the verge of a political showdown after 70 Nairobi MCAs signed an impeachment motion against him.

The ward representatives accuse the governor of incompetence, negligence, and failing to prioritize development projects in the capital.

The motion gained momentum during a Kamukunji convened by Speaker Ken Ngondi on Sunday, August 31. The meeting was meant to address frustrations over stalled ward projects.

How Many MCAs Back the Motion?

Nairobi County currently has 123 MCAs after the death of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai confirmed that nearly 70 members have already signed the motion.

“Today Sunday, 31 August 2025, close to 70 signatures have been collected in a members’ initiated process to impeach Nairobi Governor, Johnson Arthur Sakaja. The county assembly has 123 members after the death of Hon Joel Munuve, MCA Kariobangi North Ward,” Alai said.

However, for the motion to succeed, at least 93 MCAs must support it.

Raila’s Closed-Door Meeting

The push comes just days after reports emerged that Raila Odinga held a consultative meeting with Sakaja and key assembly leaders.

The meeting, held on Friday, was attended by Sakaja, Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri, Speaker Ken Ng’ondi, Majority Whip Moses Ogeto, Budget Chair Wilfred Odalo, veteran politician Fred Gumo, and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed.

Majority Leader Peter Imwatok missed the talks as he was reportedly in Busia.

The discussions focused on governance and leadership challenges in Nairobi amid growing discontent among MCAs.

Abbas Khalif Dismisses Ouster Push

Not all ward reps are convinced about the impeachment.

South C MCA Abass Khalif criticized the move, describing it as poorly timed and unnecessary.

“The Kamukunji called by Speaker Ken Ngondi was about the welfare of members, not collecting signatures to oust Sakaja,” Khalif said.

He further questioned the basis of the impeachment.

“So far, the proponents have not stated clear grievances that can warrant removing the governor,” he added.

Khalif also stressed that political backing would be crucial for any motion.

“An impeachment motion cannot succeed without the support of President William Ruto and Raila Odinga,” he said.

He maintained that Nairobi is behind the broad-based government and that the motion lacks strong ground.

What Next for Sakaja?

The impeachment drive puts Sakaja in a tough spot.

If the signatures reach the required 93, Nairobi will witness a high-stakes political battle with far-reaching implications for the county’s leadership.
