Meru University Dropout Arrested for Allegedly Breaching Betting Firm, Stealing Over KSh 11m
Detectives from the DCI Banking Fraud Investigations Unit stormed Seth Mwabe’s residence at Tatu City, Kiambu County, on Saturday, August 30.
Officers revealed Mwabe had dropped out in his second year while studying a Bachelor of Information Technology. Yet, he allegedly posed as a cybersecurity engineer while running hacking schemes targeting major companies.
Police Raid in Tatu City
Detectives said Mwabe initially refused to open his apartment door. Consequently, officers were forced to break in.

Mwabe Defends Himself
However, Mwabe strongly denied involvement in cybercrime. He insisted he was a legitimate consultant working with firms on security risks.
“I am a cybersecurity engineer, and this is what I have been doing since 2017. I get consulted by different companies,” Mwabe told officers.
His defense, however, did little to sway detectives, who maintained he had masterminded several fraudulent operations.
Police Speak on Cybercrime
Authorities warned that cybercrime is on the rise, and police are intensifying efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.
DCI officer Mugambi emphasized that no criminal can outrun the law.
“We are grappling with white-collar crime, particularly computer-based crimes. Criminals will try to run, but they will not hide. The National Police Service is up to the task,” Mugambi said.
He assured Kenyans that investigations into cyber fraud remain a top priority for security agencies.
Next Legal Steps
Mwabe was taken to Capitol Hill Police Station. He will remain in custody until the Director of Public Prosecutions approves charges.
He is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, September 1. If convicted, he could face years in jail under Kenya’s cybercrime laws.
A Growing Threat
The arrest highlights the growing challenge of cybercrime in Kenya. More young, tech-savvy individuals are turning to hacking as companies shift their operations online.

For many Kenyans, the case has sparked fear and curiosity in equal measure. While some view Mwabe as a cunning fraudster, others see him as a wasted talent who could have thrived in the tech world.
