Officer Accused of Shooting Rex Masai Denies Being in Nairobi During Protests, Disputes CCTV Footage
A storm of emotions hit the courtroom on Wednesday, July 16, as Isaiah Murangiri Ndumi, the police officer accused of fatally shooting Rex Masai during the anti-finance bill protests, flatly denied being in Nairobi that day.
Despite a barrage of photo and video evidence presented by the prosecution, the officer remained defiant.
“The person in a blue shirt and grey trousers with a walkie-talkie, is that you?” the prosecutor asked.
“No, your honour, that is not me,” replied Ndumi, his voice steady but firm.
The courtroom sat in stunned silence as CCTV footage allegedly showing the officer along Nairobi’s Uhuru Highway and CBD during the protests played on the screen. But even as image after image showed a man fitting the officer’s description, he strongly pushed back.

“I am not the one; that person does not bear any resemblance to me,” Ndumi said.
He even rejected the claim that the man in the footage had a similar facial mark.
“I don’t have a mark like that on my face,” he argued.
Ndumi’s response was unwavering.
“I did not hold a gun. That’s not me,” he told the court, brushing off the accusations.
But the evidence kept piling up. Cellphone tower records placed him at the scene of the shooting. Yet, he dismissed that too.

Meanwhile, lead investigator Paul Njehia dropped a bombshell in his testimony.
“Samples picked from the scene and Rex Masai’s body have been matched through DNA,” Njehia told the court.
“It has already been established that Rex was shot during the protests.”
This chilling revelation brought a heavy silence over the courtroom. Still, the accused remained unfazed.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since ordered three other officers to record statements, hinting at a wider probe into Rex’s death.
As the case unfolds, the nation watches. The Masai family, still seeking justice, left the courtroom without comment—grief and hope etched into their faces.

The pursuit of truth, it seems, is only just beginning.
