Security Guards Protest Colleague’s Shooting During June 25 Demos

Tears flowed. Voices rose. Security guards in Nairobi took to the streets on Thursday, July 17, demanding answers and justice. Their pain was clear. Their colleague, Fred Wamale, was shot dead while on duty during the violent June 25 protests.

“We want justice for Fred!” shouted a grieving guard during the protest.
“He didn’t deserve to die like that,” another added with a trembling voice.

Fred Wamale, a quiet and dedicated man, met his tragic end around 4:30 pm while guarding a building. His employer confirmed the horrifying details — Wamale was performing his duties when he was shot. A post-mortem later revealed the bullet ripped through his abdomen and pierced his spine.

Fear and Frustration Spread Among Guards

Wamale’s colleagues now live in fear.
“Next time, it could be one of us,” one guard exclaimed. “We are always on the frontlines, yet we are not armed or protected.”

Private security guards are often left out of critical safety conversations, even though they face daily risks. During protests, they must stand guard. But they have no shields, no weapons — only a uniform and loyalty to duty.

One protester asked:
“How many more must die before someone acts?”

Renewed Protests Trigger Painful Memories

The protest coincided with fresh nationwide demonstrations. Citizens gathered to remember the June 25 anti-finance bill marches — a day that saw violence, loss, and heartbreak. For Wamale’s colleagues, the day reopened wounds that have not healed.

“This is not just about Fred,” said another protester. “This is about all of us.”

The guards now want a full investigation. They demand those responsible for Wamale’s death be arrested and prosecuted.

A Call for Safety and Respect

As the sun scorched the streets of Nairobi, the guards held placards and chanted for justice. They called on authorities to not only investigate but also provide better protection during national unrest.

“We protect lives and property,” one guard shouted. “But who protects us?”

Their message was clear: Private security guards are not disposable. They deserve dignity. They deserve protection. They demand answers.

And most of all — they want justice for Fred.
