Goons Singing “Wantam” Storm Kimathi Street, Rob Traders in Broad Daylight
Business owners along Kimathi Street, Nairobi CBD, are counting heavy losses after armed goons attacked and looted shops in broad daylight.
The shocking incident occurred on Sunday, August 24, leaving traders terrified and property worth millions stolen.
Goons Strike While Singing “Wantam”
According to witnesses, the group appeared outside Nanak House, opposite Sarova Stanley Hotel. Many of them wore masks and carried knives.

“I heard people outside singing ‘wantam’. One of them entered, strangled me, and threatened me with a knife,” a shaken trader recounted.
The goons allegedly locked shop doors, pulled out sacks, and cleared shelves of clothes, cosmetics, and other products.
Businesses Left in Ruins
Videos and images circulating online showed broken windows, smashed furniture, and looted shelves both inside and outside the premises.
“They came in with sacks, closed the door, and took everything. I was helpless,” another business owner painfully explained.
The attack left traders in tears, forced to stare at their destroyed shops and vanished stock.
Criminal Trend Rising
This is not an isolated case. Business owners claim criminal activity along Kimathi Street has been increasing, yet no concrete police action has followed.
“We report these attacks, but nothing is done. We feel abandoned,” a trader lamented.
The latest robbery comes only weeks after a similar incident in Mukuru kwa Reuben, where looters made away with goods worth KSh4.8 million. That attack, which happened on July 20, also left more than 46 workers jobless.
Victims Speak Out
Survivors from the earlier attack recall the terrifying ordeal.
“We came to work at 5am. At 8am, strange men stormed in, throwing stones. They ransacked everything,” one businessperson said.
For many traders, these businesses are their only source of income. With shops looted, families now face unbearable financial strain.

“We cannot feed our children or pay rent. We are suffering,” a worker added.
Police Investigations
Following Sunday’s attack, security agencies in Nairobi confirmed they had launched investigations to track down the suspects.
Authorities promised tighter surveillance in the CBD, but residents and traders remain fearful.

For now, Kimathi Street is left scarred, its traders living in fear, and its economy shaken by brazen daylight crime.
