Malala Warns Gachagua’s Arrest Could Spark Protests, Disrupt CHAN Matches in Kasarani
Threat of Protests During CHAN
Speaking during an interview with Radio Citizen on Monday, August 18, Malala cautioned that the move could trigger unrest. He linked the potential protests to disruptions at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-finals in Kasarani.
“If you apprehend Rigathi Gachagua the following day, you will see demonstrations. The Harambee Stars will be playing on Friday, but fans may not reach Kasarani,” Malala warned.
He further painted a grim picture of the aftermath.

“If Gachagua is apprehended for even a single day, Thika Road will be impassable. There will be chaos, and people will not watch the games. You cannot apprehend Gachagua and then the country keeps quiet,” he added.

Reputation at Stake
Malala argued that detaining Gachagua at such a moment would damage President William Ruto’s reputation on the international stage. With the global spotlight on Kenya because of CHAN, he claimed, the government risked embarrassment.
The DCP leader also criticized Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for demanding a statement from Gachagua over his recent controversial remarks.
“Gachagua is being threatened with apprehension because he claimed government officials were meeting with RFT and Al-Shabaab. That is true, and the evidence is there,” Malala alleged.
He insisted Gachagua would only issue a statement at the Senate or the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Murkomen Responds
“It’s no longer a joke who the former Deputy President is. Many of you share his messages online, encouraging someone unwell to keep saying things that will hurt our country,” Murkomen said.
The minister also urged Kenyans to stop sharing Gachagua’s videos on social media, warning that they risked undermining Kenya’s political and security stability.
Gachagua’s Return
Gachagua confirmed he cut short his U.S. trip to prepare for upcoming by-elections. He is expected back in the country on Thursday, August 21.

“I had a very successful and fulfilling visit to the United States with serious engagements with Kenyans in the Diaspora. However, I regret being unable to visit the remaining States because I must return home and join our party, DCP, in preparation for the upcoming by-elections,” Gachagua said.
Malala has since announced that supporters will flood Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome him back.
