NPS Warns of Tough Action After Violence at Kindiki’s Embu Meeting
The violence occurred at Nembure Stadium on Saturday, September 12, during a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting attended by the Deputy President.
According to the NPS, a group of uninvited individuals attempted to storm the meeting, forcing police officers to intervene and disperse them.
The confrontation reportedly escalated into running battles involving crowds and security officers, disrupting the meeting and forcing the evacuation of Kindiki from the venue.
“The National Police Service condemns in the strongest possible terms the outrageous and criminal conduct of a group of individuals who attempted to storm a public meeting presided over by the Deputy President, H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki, in Nembure, Embu County.”
The NPS said officers responded after the group allegedly attempted to enter the meeting unlawfully.
Several suspects were arrested at the scene as police moved to restore order.
“Upon the group’s unlawful attempt to breach the meeting, officers acted decisively and repulsed the assailants. Several suspects were arrested at the scene, and law and order was swiftly restored.”
One person killed, vehicles torched
The police confirmed that one person was fatally injured during the confrontation, while several others sustained injuries.
Six vehicles were also reportedly torched, with the damage estimated to be worth millions of shillings.
“Regrettably, one person was fatally injured, six vehicles were torched, and several persons were injured during the chaos. Investigations have commenced to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident, and no effort will be spared in identifying and bringing to justice all persons involved.”
The NPS said investigators would work to identify everyone who participated in the violence and establish how the confrontation escalated.
Police issue stern warning
The NPS said those found to have participated in the Nembure clashes would face legal action.
“Let this serve as an unequivocal warning: any individual found to have participated in this or any similar act of lawlessness will be pursued relentlessly. Stern action will be taken in accordance with the law. There will be no exceptions.”
The warning comes as investigators work to establish the sequence of events that led to the confrontation, death, injuries and destruction of property.
Kindiki evacuated amid clashes
The chaos broke out at Nembure Stadium, where Kindiki was leading a UDA meeting.
Reports indicated that groups of local youths were denied entry into the venue before tensions escalated.
The situation reportedly deteriorated quickly, with crowds engaging in running battles as police attempted to contain the unrest.
Security officers eventually evacuated Kindiki from the venue as the confrontation intensified.
Kindiki also directed UDA leaders in Embu to assess the extent of the damage and losses caused by the clashes.
The leaders were expected to coordinate a response to those affected by the destruction.
The incident has renewed attention on security at political gatherings, particularly as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.
For now, the NPS has maintained that those found culpable will face legal consequences as investigations into the Nembure incident continue.
