Kenyan-Born Sally Kimondo Becomes First Black Mayor of Dunstable, UK
On Monday, 19 May, the Dunstable Town Council officially confirmed her as the first Black Mayor of Dunstable, a historic town in Bedfordshire, United Kingdom.
“We are proud to announce a truly historic milestone for our town,” the council stated.
“Cllr Sally Kimondo has officially been appointed as the first black Mayor of Dunstable.”
From Kenya to the UK — A Journey of Purpose
Kimondo’s story began in Kenya, where she was born into a political family. She is the daughter of the late Hon. Kiruhi, a former MP for Starehe Constituency.
Despite relocating to the UK at an early age, her roots and commitment to community empowerment remained firm. She later graduated from the University of Bedfordshire with a degree in Social Work.
More so, she founded the Luton, Dunstable & Surrounding Kenya Community Forum, a multi-award-winning initiative, which she still chairs.

A Leader with Vision and Action
Nearly a year before her mayoral appointment, Kimondo clinched the Dunstable East Councillor seat with 372 votes, beating three other candidates.
At the time, she promised to fix potholes, improve public lighting, and push for affordable fuel and better amenities.
Her new mayoral role is no less demanding. As Mayor, she will represent the town, preside over council meetings, and champion charity and community initiatives.
The town council commended her as a “visionary leader” with a wealth of experience—qualities they say are perfect for her role.
Elected alongside her is Richard Attwell, who will serve as Deputy Town Mayor.
A Proud Moment for Kenya and the Diaspora
For Kenyans and Africans in the UK and abroad, Kimondo’s win is more than symbolic.
It speaks to representation, resilience, and the power of identity in public service.

Back in Kenya, news of her achievement has sparked excitement and inspiration, especially among young girls aspiring to lead.
However, with her new role, the Dunstable East councillor seat she held will now be declared vacant, in line with UK law.
As she steps into this groundbreaking role, many hope Kimondo will light the path for others.
