U.S. Offers KSh1.3B Reward for Manda Bay Terror Suspects
The reward, equal to $10 million, is aimed at nabbing masterminds like Abdullahi Banati, one of the most wanted men linked to the horrific attack.
U.S. Sends Strong Message

In a powerful statement on Wednesday, May 8, the U.S. Embassy in Somalia called on the public to assist.
“The US Department of State’s Rewards for Justice (RFJ) program, administered by the Diplomatic Security Service, is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Abdullahi Banati or any other individual responsible for the January 5, 2020, terrorist attack on US and Kenyan personnel at the Manda Bay Airfield in Kenya,” the statement declared.
Importantly, the embassy emphasized confidentiality.
“Any information provided will remain strictly confidential.”

Remembering the Attack
The Somali-based extremist group, Al-Shabaab, struck at dawn on January 5, 2020. Armed with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), they targeted the base’s airstrip, setting U.S. and Kenyan aircraft and vehicles ablaze.
The human cost was devastating.
“The attack claimed the lives of one U.S. service member, two U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) contractors, and injured two U.S. soldiers, one DoD contractor, and a Kenyan soldier,” the embassy revealed.
A Base with a Mission
The Manda Bay Airfield, part of a Kenyan Defense Forces base, holds immense strategic value.
“The Manda Bay Airfield is part of a Kenyan Defense Forces military base utilized by U.S. armed forces to provide training and counterterrorism support to East African partners, respond to crises, and protect U.S. interests in the region,” the embassy explained.
Ongoing Threat
The U.S. issued a chilling warning.

“As the principal East African affiliate of the al-Qa’ida terrorist organization, Al-Shabaab is responsible for numerous terrorist attacks in Kenya, Somalia, and neighboring countries that have killed thousands of people, including U.S. citizens.”
Alarmingly, the group still plots more attacks targeting U.S. and allied interests.
