Kalonzo Musyoka Raises Alarm Over 2027 Election Rigging, Demands Fair IEBC Appointments
Kalonzo’s Demands to Ruto and Raila
Kalonzo has written a formal letter to Raila, with a copy sent to Ruto, expressing deep concern over the ongoing reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). He insists on the need for non-partisan officials to oversee elections.
According to Kalonzo, Ruto must consult with opposition leaders before naming new electoral officials. He argues that Raila, after striking a deal with Ruto, no longer represents the opposition’s interests.
“I firmly believe that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), now aligned on one side, should engage in discussions with those of us in the opposition to ensure a balanced and inclusive process,” Kalonzo stated.
Pre-Rigging Fears and Opposition’s Stand
Kalonzo, a key Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party principal, warned that appointing the IEBC chairperson and six commissioners without consulting opposition leaders would be seen as a pre-rigging strategy by the ODM-UDA coalition.
“For the avoidance of doubt, should the UDA/ODM alliance proceed with the appointment of the IEBC chairperson and commissioners without the meaningful participation of the opposition, such an action will be viewed as an attempt to establish a partisan electoral body and pre-rig the next elections,” he added.

Call for Electoral Transparency
Kalonzo emphasized the importance of a fair electoral body that represents all Kenyans. He called on the president to uphold democracy and avoid manipulating election processes in favor of any political faction.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to fighting against any attempts to undermine the people’s will. “We cannot allow an electoral process that serves political interests rather than the sovereignty of Kenyans. We will resist any move that threatens democracy,” he vowed.
Uncertainty as Political Tensions Rise
With Raila and Ruto seemingly working together, opposition voices fear being sidelined in the crucial IEBC reconstitution. Kalonzo’s demand signals potential political battles ahead as leaders position themselves for 2027.
Political analysts believe the push for inclusivity in IEBC appointments will determine the credibility of Kenya’s next elections. Whether Ruto and Raila will respond to Kalonzo’s call remains uncertain, but tension is already building.
