Kiambu Governor Wamatangi Raises Bursary Fund from KSh 100M to KSh 750M
Parents and students in Kiambu County have every reason to celebrate! Governor Kimani Wamatangi has significantly increased the county’s annual bursary allocation, raising it from KSh 100 million to an impressive KSh 750 million. This move promises to change the education landscape by ensuring more students receive financial support.
How Has Wamatangi Increased Bursary Funds?
When Wamatangi took office, the county allocated only KSh 100 million annually for bursaries. Over the years, three previous governors had collectively disbursed just KSh 1 billion. Many students received as little as KSh 1,500, an amount barely enough to cover essential school needs.
Recognizing the urgent need for change, Wamatangi took decisive action. In 2023, he tripled the bursary allocation to KSh 300 million per year. Building on this momentum, the 2024/2025 financial year budget raised the fund to KSh 500 million.
Streamlining the Distribution Process
To ensure an efficient and transparent distribution of bursary funds, the governor has introduced structured application processes. Wamatangi recently distributed bursary application forms to committees in all 60 wards. These committees will oversee applications for a KSh 100 million scholarship programme, set for disbursement in the second term.

“Today, we have distributed bursary application forms to the bursary committees in all 60 wards to facilitate applications for the KSh 100 million scholarship programme,” Wamatangi stated.
This scholarship is part of the broader KSh 500 million bursary allocation for the 2024/2025 financial year. Each ward will receive an equal share of KSh 8.3 million, ensuring fair access to educational support across the county.
Further Increases in the Pipeline
The governor has even bigger plans for education funding. Starting in June, Kiambu will further increase the bursary allocation to KSh 750 million. The funds will be divided into two key components:
- KSh 500 million: Distributed equally among all 60 wards.
- KSh 250 million: Allocated as an equalization fund to support overpopulated wards with more students in need.
This increase means each beneficiary will receive between KSh 5,000 and KSh 10,000, significantly easing the financial burden on families.
Widespread Praise for the Initiative
The move has been met with widespread appreciation. Parents, students, and education stakeholders have applauded Wamatangi’s commitment to supporting education.
