William Ruto Appoints Khatib Mwashetani as NTSA Chair After Raila Ally Rejects Position

Nairobi, Kenya – President William Ruto has officially appointed former Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani as the new non-executive chairperson of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). This move comes after ODM party national treasurer Timothy Bosire rejected the same position earlier this year.

Ruto’s Choice for NTSA Leadership

Mwashetani will now serve as NTSA chair for a three-year term, filling a role that remained vacant since Bosire’s unexpected decline. His appointment, announced through a gazette notice published on Friday, March 28, is set to last until 2028.

The gazette notice reads: “In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6(1)(a) of the National Transport and Safety Authority Act, as read together with section 51(1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Mwashetani Khatib Abdallah for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 28th of March, 2025.”

Why Did Raila’s Ally Decline the Role?

Timothy Bosire, a close confidant of opposition leader Raila Odinga, had been named to the NTSA chair position on January 17. However, he refused the appointment, leaving the position vacant for months. Although Bosire did not publicly state his reasons, political analysts speculate that his rejection may have been a strategic move to avoid aligning with Ruto’s administration.

Who is Khatib Mwashetani?

Mwashetani, a former two-term MP for Lunga Lunga, is known for his political resilience and experience in governance. He served under the Jubilee administration and was an active player in coastal politics. His appointment to NTSA signals Ruto’s trust in him to oversee the agency responsible for road safety and transport regulation in Kenya.

Political Undercurrents and Public Reactions

The appointment has sparked discussions within political circles. Some view it as Ruto’s strategy to consolidate influence in the coastal region. Others see it as a straightforward effort to fill a crucial leadership gap at NTSA.

Meanwhile, transport stakeholders and road safety advocates hope Mwashetani will bring positive reforms. His tenure will involve tackling rising road accidents, enforcing transport regulations, and enhancing NTSA’s efficiency.

What’s Next for NTSA?

With Mwashetani at the helm, NTSA is expected to roll out new strategies to improve road safety. His leadership will be under close scrutiny, especially with increasing road fatalities and transport sector inefficiencies.
