Agnes Kagure Confident of Unseating Sakaja in 2027: “Mambo Itakuwa Best”
Nairobi is bracing for a fierce political showdown in 2027 as businesswoman Agnes Kagure confidently declares her intention to unseat Governor Johnson Sakaja. Kagure, who previously ran as an independent candidate in 2022, has vowed to correct past mistakes and emerge victorious.
In a bold statement on her X account, Kagure expressed optimism about her chances, saying, “A TBT with lots of lessons but more importantly, hope. We are sealing all the previous loopholes and in 2027, mambo itakuwa best. Nairobi must rise!”
Kagure’s 2022 Bid: A Lesson for the Future
Kagure competed in the 2022 Nairobi gubernatorial race but finished fourth in a crowded contest. Johnson Sakaja won, while Polycarp Igathe came second, and Harman Grewal secured third place. However, Kagure now views that experience as a stepping stone, promising a more refined strategy in 2027.
Her campaign is already gaining momentum, with increased grassroots mobilization and growing support from influential community groups. In September 2024, a faction of the Kikuyu Council of Elders pledged their backing, a major political boost.

Rising Discontent with Sakaja’s Leadership
Criticism of Sakaja’s administration has fueled Kagure’s confidence. Many Nairobi residents complain about uncollected garbage, harassment of small-scale traders, and inadequate support for education. Kagure is positioning herself as a leader who understands these struggles and is ready to deliver tangible solutions.
Through the Agnes Kagure Foundation, she has long focused on youth and women empowerment. This track record, she believes, sets her apart as a leader with a people-first agenda.
Raila Endorses Sakaja, Sparking Political Tensions
In a move that surprised many, ODM leader Raila Odinga endorsed Sakaja for a second term during a prayer event at Bomas of Kenya on February 10. The event, organized by ODM’s Women’s Chapter to support Raila’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, saw him praise Sakaja’s leadership.
The endorsement triggered political ripples within ODM, especially among hopefuls like Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, who are eyeing the governor’s seat.
Babu Owino dismissed Raila’s endorsement, insisting that his support comes from God and the people. He also questioned Sakaja’s loyalty to Raila, suggesting that ODM members should be cautious about backing a UDA-affiliated governor.
A Battle of Strategy and Influence
As Nairobi prepares for the 2027 election, the battle lines are already drawn. Kagure is banking on growing discontent with Sakaja’s administration, while the governor enjoys strong political endorsements. The race is expected to be one of the most competitive in Kenya’s political landscape.
