Rigathi Gachagua Warns CDF Charles Kahariri to Stay Out of Politics: “Itakuchoma”
Naivasha – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stern warning to Kenya’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, urging him to stay out of politics. Gachagua insisted that the military must remain neutral and not be drawn into President William Ruto’s political struggles.
Speaking at Reverend Harrison Kinyua’s consecration in Naivasha, Gachagua told Kahariri to focus on protecting the country rather than interfering in political matters.
“Kenyans have given up on Ruto, and you can’t save him. The military must remain professional because it is the only institution Kenyans still trust. Please return to the barracks, protect the country, and stay away from politics—it will only taint you,” Gachagua declared.
Why Gachagua Is Opposing Kahariri
Gachagua’s remarks come after Kahariri addressed the growing “Ruto Must Go” protests that have swept across the nation. The movement, which gained momentum after the Gen Z-led demonstrations in June 2024, continues to shake the government.
However, Gachagua dismissed the military chief’s concerns, insisting that the chants are a reflection of Kenyans’ frustrations. He clarified that the phrase is a political statement meant to rally voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“This is a clarion call in preparation for 2027. Ruto will be removed through a democratic election. Don’t tell us it is unconstitutional—he will be voted out,” Gachagua asserted.
Kahariri’s Concerns Over Public Unrest
Kahariri made his remarks during a lecture at the National Intelligence and Research University in Nairobi. He warned that uncontrolled political uprisings could push Kenya toward lawlessness. He also emphasized that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) remain apolitical and will not interfere in the country’s democratic process.

Alongside Kahariri, National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Noordin Haji also called for peaceful demonstrations, urging Kenyans to use legal channels to air their grievances.
Leaders React to Kahariri’s Statements
The CDF’s comments sparked mixed reactions among political leaders.
Martha Karua, the People’s Liberation Party leader, criticized Kahariri, stating that the protests are a form of democratic expression that the government should take seriously.
“Instead of silencing the people, the government should listen. Kenyans are suffering, and they are speaking their truth,” Karua said.
However, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi defended Kahariri, arguing that his remarks were taken out of context.
“The general only reminded Kenyans to stay within the law. That’s not political, it’s common sense,” Amisi noted.
Growing Political Tensions
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the “Ruto Must Go” movement is intensifying, placing the government under immense pressure. As more Kenyans voice their frustrations, political tensions are expected to rise.
Whether Kahariri heeds Gachagua’s warning or continues to speak out remains to be seen.
