Speaking during the launch of the Martha Karua-led People Liberation Party (PLP), Kalonzo stressed the importance of recognizing this day in Kenya’s history.
“J-25 Should Be a Liberation Day”
“I have a very serious proposal. To honor the young Kenyans who died, especially on June 25, which I call J-25, we must declare it a public holiday,” Kalonzo stated.
He argued that this day symbolizes the fight against injustice, abductions, corruption, and impoverishment of citizens. He insisted that the youth, especially Gen Z, deserve this recognition.
“Our young people are still angry, but they have become an inspiration to the world,” he added.
Kalonzo’s Bold Move: Push for June 25 Public Holiday to Honor Slain Protesters
The state crackdown on protesters only fueled more outrage, turning June 25 into a defining moment in Kenya’s political landscape.
A Government Forced to Listen
Initially, President William Ruto remained firm on passing the bill. However, the dramatic breach of Parliament by protesters forced him to reconsider. Shortly after the incident, he announced the withdrawal of the bill and sent it back to Parliament for annulment.
