In a dramatic twist, KANU party leader Gideon Moi has withdrawn from the Baringo Senatorial by-election, barely a week after declaring his candidacy. His sudden exit has stirred emotions, triggered protests, and raised eyebrows over a reported secret meeting with President William Ruto.

“I’m Not Running”—Gideon Moi Steps Aside

On Thursday, October 9, Moi confirmed he would not contest the November 27 by-election. His decision came without explanation, leaving supporters stunned.

“I will not be running for the Baringo seat,” Moi stated. “KANU will not field a candidate,” added party Secretary General George Wainaina.

This move effectively gives UDA’s Vincent Chemitei a clear path to victory.

Before the announcement, Moi failed to submit his nomination papers to IEBC. This sparked protests in Kabarnet, his political stronghold.

“We expected him to fight for Baringo,” shouted one angry supporter. “This is betrayal,” another added.

KANU loyalists expressed disappointment, accusing the leadership of abandoning the region.

“He Met Ruto at State House”—Secret Talks Raise Questions

Sources revealed that Moi’s withdrawal followed a closed-door meeting with President Ruto at State House. The meeting reportedly focused on the Baringo race and broader national issues.

“Gideon was invited by the President,” a source close to KANU confirmed. “They held candid discussions,” the insider added.

Moi was accompanied by Wainaina and former Baringo Woman Representative Gladwell Cheruiyot.

“He Was a Fierce Critic”—Shift Surprises Political Observers

Moi’s decision shocked many, especially after his vocal criticism of Ruto’s administration. He had previously vowed not to align with the regime and allegedly used Standard Group platforms to challenge government policies.

Moi lost the Baringo seat in 2022 to the late William Cheptumo, with UDA sweeping most seats in the region.
