Millicent Omanga Disowns Viral Gazette Notice Naming Her to Govt Board

Former nominated Senator Millicent Omanga has distanced herself from a government appointment after a Gazette Notice carrying a similar name triggered speculation that she had landed a new state role.

The controversy followed Gazette Notice No. 15003, dated August 26, 2026, in which Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen appointed 10 people to the Board of Visitors of Shikusa Borstal Institution.

Among those listed was a person identified as Millicent Kerubo Omanga, appointed for a three-year term beginning August 14, 2026. The similarity with the former senator’s name quickly generated reports and discussion online suggesting that Omanga had received another government appointment.

However, Omanga moved to clarify the matter on Saturday, September 19, saying the person named in the Gazette Notice was not her.

“My full name is Millicent Nyaboke Omanga… and to the gossipers: sorry,” Omanga wrote in a social media post.

The distinction between the two names is the basis of Omanga’s clarification. While both names contain “Millicent” and “Omanga”, the middle names listed in the Gazette Notice and those publicly used by the former senator are different.

The Gazette Notice states that the appointments were made under Section 20(1) of the Borstal Institutions Act. The Board of Visitors is responsible for visiting the institution and examining matters relating to the treatment and welfare of inmates.

The development attracted particular attention because Omanga has previously held several public appointments.

She served as a director at Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) between 2013 and 2017 before becoming a nominated senator, a position she held from 2017 to 2022.

In March 2023, Omanga was appointed as a Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Interior. Her tenure, however, was affected by a July 2023 High Court ruling that declared the appointment of CASs unconstitutional.

In October 2024, President William Ruto appointed Omanga to the Nairobi Rivers Commission. She subsequently declined the appointment, saying she would support efforts to restore Nairobi’s rivers in her private capacity.

Omanga was later appointed to the Board of Directors of Kenya Shipyards Limited in January 2025. That appointment was revoked in April 2026 as the government made changes to several state boards.

Her latest clarification therefore comes against the backdrop of her previous involvement in government institutions and public appointments.

The confusion over the Gazette Notice also comes as Omanga has remained active in politics ahead of the 2027 General Election. She has previously indicated her intention to contest the Nairobi County Woman Representative seat.

Omanga contested the same position in the 2017 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket but was unsuccessful. She was subsequently nominated to the Senate, where she served for five years.

The former senator later moved away from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) in 2026.

The Gazette Notice itself does not identify the appointed Millicent Kerubo Omanga as the former senator. The document simply lists the name among the members appointed to the Shikusa Borstal Board.

As of September 19, there was no indication in the published notice that the appointment involved former senator Millicent Nyaboke Omanga. The clarification has therefore sought to separate her identity from the person named in the government document.
