Chaos Rocks Kitale as Protesters Defend Governor Natembeya

Kitale Town turned into a storm zone on Monday, May 19, as residents erupted in protest following the dramatic arrest of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.

Early morning, officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) raided Natembeya’s home. Chaos broke out moments later.

Protesters Block Roads, Paralyze Kitale Town

Shortly after the raid, hundreds of residents stormed the Eldoret-Kitale highway, placing stones and burning tyres.

“Natembeya, we love you so much, forever!” protesters sang as they waved banners and blocked cars.

They also stormed Kitale Town, singing the national anthem and chanting the Governor’s slogan:

“Tawe! Tawe! Tawe!” echoed through the streets.

Police Struggle to Contain the Crowd

Despite a quick police response, tension only grew. Riot officers battled to disperse the swelling crowds.

However, reinforcements arrived soon after. Officers managed to reopen the road after intense confrontations.

Even so, emotions remained high. Protesters accused authorities of trying to “silence the people’s voice.”

EACC Confirms the Raid, Reveals Ksh1.4B Probe

In a statement, the EACC confirmed that they raided the governor’s residence and those of four other county officials.

“The Commission is probing irregular procurement and fictitious payments amounting to Ksh1.4 billion,” said the EACC.

They listed three key projects under investigation:

  • Rehabilitation of Kenyatta Stadium (Phase 1A)
  • Construction of Trans Nzoia County Headquarters
  • Establishment of Tom Mboya Hospital

Vehicles Deflated, Evidence Recovered

The crowd, growing more agitated, allegedly deflated tyres of five vehicles belonging to EACC and DCI officials.

Still, the anti-graft body says it recovered critical evidence during the operation.

“The evidence will be used in prosecuting the Governor and others,” said the commission.

The EACC also stated it is investigating money laundering and accumulation of unexplained wealth by senior county officers.

Residents Demand Answers, Chant Loyalty

The loyalty on display was overwhelming. Supporters refused to believe their Governor could be corrupt.

“He’s the only leader who speaks for us. Arresting him is punishing the people,” one protester shouted.

What’s Next for Natembeya?

With tension still rising and the EACC tightening its grip, all eyes now turn to what lies ahead for Governor Natembeya.
