“Why would anyone get angry because I shared my opinion? Some are now looking for mistakes to oust me because I exercised my right to speak,” Natembeya remarked, visibly frustrated.
Is Freedom of Speech Under Threat?
The governor asserted that Kenya’s constitution guarantees freedom of expression. He criticized those attacking him for voicing concerns over rising abductions, calling such actions a return to dictatorship. Natembeya alleged that the individuals behind these plots are the same people involved in orchestrating the abductions.
Natembeya’s remarks came after Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah criticized him for his comments on abductions. Ichung’wah accused Natembeya of playing divisive politics and linked him to abductions and killings during Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime. In response, Natembeya issued a stern warning, demanding an apology from Ichung’wah within three days.
The governor’s legal team argued that Ichung’wah’s comments had defamed him, causing harm to his reputation and exposing him to public ridicule. “We are ready to take legal action if no apology is issued. This level of defamation is unacceptable,” Natembeya’s lawyer stated.
A Battle of Words or a Fight for Justice?
Natembeya’s bold statements have sparked heated debate across political circles. Many citizens have supported his call for accountability on abductions, while others view his remarks as politically motivated. The governor, however, remains steadfast, insisting his concerns stem from genuine alarm over the abductions crisis.
“This is about justice, not politics,” he said passionately. “Silencing voices through intimidation is dictatorship. Kenyans must reject such tactics.”
