Tears in Court as Ex-Kayole OCS Breaks Down While Testifying in Murder Trial

A deeply emotional scene unfolded at Milimani High Court on Wednesday, October 29, as a former Kayole Officer Commanding Station (OCS) broke down while testifying in a high-profile murder case. The case involves six Kayole Police Station officers accused of killing Wycliffe Vincent Owuor, a suspected robber.

“Thirteen Officers Lost in Three Months” — Former OCS Shares Painful Memories

While recounting his time at Kayole Police Station, the ex-OCS struggled to hold back tears. He revealed that within just two months of his posting, 13 officers were killed by armed robbers.

“In total, during the three months I served there, 13 officers were killed while on duty, including two traffic officers who were attacked while on the road,” he told the court.

His voice cracked as he described the constant danger his team faced daily.

“We Responded to a Robbery Call” — Owuor’s Final Moments

The former OCS testified that on March 24, 2020, police received a distress call about armed robbers terrorizing residents in Kayole. Six officers were dispatched immediately.

“When the officers arrived, they ordered the suspects to surrender, but the gunmen opened fire,” he said. “The officers returned fire, killing one suspect while two others escaped on a motorcycle.”

The suspect killed was Wycliffe Vincent Owuor, previously accused of participating in the Ksh72 million Nairobi West ATM robbery in 2019.

“He Was Executed” — Family Disputes Police Report

Although the police report stated Owuor died in a shootout, his family and a witness disputed the account. They claimed he was handcuffed before being executed.

“He was not armed. He was already restrained,” a family member insisted.

This contradiction triggered an investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

“Charge Them With Murder” — IPOA Recommends Arrests

Following their probe, IPOA recommended that six officers be charged with murder. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) agreed and directed their arrest.

“The evidence supports a murder charge. We must uphold justice,” an IPOA official stated.

The trial continues as the court seeks to determine whether Owuor’s death was a lawful police operation or an unlawful execution.

“The Weight of Leadership” — Courtroom Gripped by Emotion

As the former OCS wiped away tears, the courtroom fell silent. His testimony highlighted the emotional toll of leading officers in high-risk areas.

“I carry the pain of every officer lost. It never leaves me,” he said.

His breakdown reminded many of the human cost behind every badge and every bullet.
