William Ruto Rebukes Hecklers Disrespecting Woman Rep at Shinyalu Rally
Shinyalu, Kakamega County — President William Ruto firmly condemned residents who heckled Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda during a rally in Shinyalu. The president, addressing the crowd on January 21, expressed disappointment at the disrespect shown to the female leader.
The rally, held at Shinyalu Market after a working tour, turned tense when local leaders addressed the crowd. As Muhanda began her speech, sections of the audience jeered loudly, interrupting her address. Muhanda, who has declared her interest in unseating Governor Fernandes Barasa in 2027, struggled to speak amid the noise.
She paused several times, glancing at the president, who stood atop his vehicle, seemingly observing the situation. Eventually, the heckling subsided, and she managed to deliver her message.
President Ruto Calls Out Hecklers
After Muhanda’s speech, President Ruto addressed the unruly crowd directly. He reprimanded them for their actions, labeling their behavior unacceptable.
“I want to ask you, how does a man heckle a woman? Stop that behavior. Don’t heckle a woman; do it to your fellow men,” Ruto said sternly
The president’s intervention calmed the situation and reinforced the need for respect and decorum during political engagements.

Political Rivalries Erupt
The heckling highlighted growing political tensions in Kakamega, where leaders are jostling for influence ahead of the 2027 elections. Muhanda’s ambitions to challenge Governor Barasa have already sparked intense rivalry, with some factions opposing her openly
This incident followed another contentious moment in Kakamega on January 20. During an event attended by President Ruto, Senator Boni Khalwale criticized Governor Barasa, accusing him of stalling projects initiated by his predecessor, Wycliffe Oparanya.

Despite Khalwale’s criticism, President Ruto appeared to defend Governor Barasa. He revealed that the governor had approached him for assistance with key projects, including the expansion of Kakamega County Referral Hospital and fast-tracking construction at Bukhungu Stadium.
Ruto assured the residents of his administration’s commitment to supporting development in Kakamega. “We must work together to complete these projects and deliver better services for the people,” he said.
A Call for Unity and Respect
President Ruto urged leaders and residents to rise above political differences and foster unity. He reminded the crowd that respect and collaboration are vital for progress.
“Let’s focus on development and leave political animosity behind. Respect each other, especially our women leaders,” Ruto concluded.
