Uproar at Gatunguru Boys as Parents Protest Ksh25,000 Dormitory Fee
Chaos erupted at Gatunguru Boys High School in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, after furious parents stormed the compound. Their anger was triggered by a demand from the school administration for each parent to pay Ksh25,000 to rebuild dormitories destroyed by fire.
“We’re Already Struggling”—Parents Cry Out
The inferno, which occurred on September 7, reduced the dormitories to ashes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, students have remained at home for over two weeks, disrupting their learning.
Parents were shocked when the school board informed them that all outstanding fees must be cleared—and an additional Ksh25,000 paid—before students could return.

“We’re already struggling with school fees and family needs,” one parent lamented. “Now they want more money. It’s unfair,” she added.
Another parent, visibly frustrated, said his son was still at home despite having cleared all school fees.
“My child is missing classes because of this Ksh25,000 debt,” he said. “The government must intervene,” he added.
Form Fours Hit Hard as Exams Approach
Many parents expressed concern for Form Four students, who are preparing for their KCSE exams. They fear the delay could affect their children’s performance.

“Our children are losing valuable time while others are in class,” another parent said. “This directive is especially unfair to candidates,” she added.
School Defends the Fee, Cites Assessment
Despite the backlash, the school defended the fee. The administration explained that the amount was reduced from Ksh50,000 after consultations with the Department of Public Works.
Board Chairperson Peter Macharia addressed the parents directly.
“Our priority is to get students back to school and provide accommodation,” Macharia said. “The Ksh25,000 contribution was the fairest compromise,” he added.
Public Demands Transparency and Government Support
As tensions rise, many are calling on the Ministry of Education to step in. Parents argue that rebuilding school infrastructure should not fall entirely on their shoulders

“The government should help. We can’t carry this burden alone,” said a concerned father.
