Shock in Kisumu as Eight Police Officers Arrested Over Stolen Land Cruiser at Maseno Station

A cloud of disbelief has descended on Kisumu County after eight police officers from Maseno Police Station were arrested over the mysterious disappearance of a Toyota Land Cruiser V8. The incident has triggered outrage, embarrassment, and renewed calls for accountability within the police service.

“How Does a Car Vanish From a Police Station?” Public Demands Answers

According to a police report, the black Toyota Land Cruiser was first found abandoned at Maseno Shopping Centre. Officers then moved it to the station’s yard for safekeeping. However, in a shocking twist, the vehicle later vanished from the compound.

“The arrests followed investigations into the theft of a black Toyota Land Cruiser V8,” the report stated. “It had been reported stolen from Maseno Police Station parking yard on September 16, 2025,” it added.

The same vehicle was later recovered—again abandoned—at the same shopping centre. It was returned to the station, but questions remain about how it disappeared in the first place.

Officers Arrested in Joint Operation

On Monday evening, September 22, a joint operation involving the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), County Criminal Investigation Officers (CCIO), and the Kisumu County Police Commander led to the arrest of the eight officers.

“This case is under active investigation by DCI Nairobi Headquarters and CCIO Kisumu,” the report confirmed. “The officers are in custody as part of ongoing efforts to establish the circumstances,” it added.

Currently, the suspects are being held at Kisumu Central Police Station. They await further interrogation and possible disciplinary action.

Public Trust in Police Faces Another Blow

The incident has sparked widespread anger among Kisumu residents, many of whom feel betrayed by those meant to protect them.

“If police can’t secure a car inside their own station, what can they secure?” asked a local trader. “This is shameful. We need answers,” another resident added.

Investigators are now trying to piece together how the vehicle disappeared from a supposedly secure compound. The police have urged the public to come forward with any information that could help solve the case.

“We appeal to anyone with relevant details to report immediately,” said a DCI officer.

As the investigation deepens, Kenyans are watching closely. Will justice be served, or will this case join the growing list of unresolved police scandals?
