Raila Reveals KDF Deployment Forced Truce With Ruto to Save Kenya From Collapse
ODM leader Raila Odinga has finally broken his silence on the real reason behind his unexpected truce with President William Ruto. Speaking at the ODM Parliamentary Group meeting on Monday, September 22, Raila revealed that the deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests pushed him to act.
“We Were On the Brink,” Raila Warns
Raila described the situation as dangerously close to military rule. He said the country was teetering on the edge of collapse.
“About a year ago, we got together with the UDA party to help steady the ship of the Kenyan nation,” Raila stated. “It had been hit by extreme turbulence and was on the verge of collapse,” he added.
He emphasized that few Kenyans understood how serious the crisis had become.

“Some people may not know exactly where we were,” Raila said. “But I had a first-hand impression. We were almost on the precipice,” he warned.
KDF Presence on Streets Raised Alarming Signals
Raila recalled the chilling sight of military personnel on the streets during the protests. Although they remained civil, he feared what could happen if orders were issued.
“After so many days of demonstration, you saw the military on the streets,” Raila explained. “They were fairly civil, but that was because they had not been given instructions,” he added.
He stressed that once the Chief of Defence Forces gives orders, the military executes without hesitation.

“They almost executed,” Raila said gravely.
“Better Ballot Than Bullet,” Raila Declares
Faced with the threat of military intervention, Raila chose dialogue over confrontation. He believed preserving peace was more important than political pride.
“I deemed it better to have a civil country,” he said. “Leadership must be determined through the ballot, not through the bullet,” he added.
Raila Commends MPs, Recalls 2007 Sacrifice
Raila also praised ODM MPs for standing firm during turbulent times. He reminded them of the sacrifices made in 2007 when he let go of his claim to power for the sake of peace.
“I had to let go then, and I did it again,” Raila said.
His revelations have sparked emotional reactions nationwide. Many now view the truce not as betrayal, but as a bold move to protect Kenya’s democracy.
