Murkomen Orders Chiefs to Be Armed by December in Bold Security Overhaul

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a powerful directive: all chiefs and assistant chiefs in terror-prone areas must be armed by December. The announcement, made during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Mandera County on Monday, September 22, has sparked intense debate and emotional reactions across the country.

“Protect Our Chiefs or Risk Losing Ground,” Murkomen Warns

Murkomen emphasized that the move is critical to safeguarding local administrators from extremist threats and rampant insecurity.

“By December, all chiefs in need of firearm protection should be armed,” Murkomen declared. “Those who do not require training should be issued firearms without delay,” he added.

He explained that chiefs unfamiliar with firearms will undergo training immediately. Those already proficient will receive weapons without hesitation.

Mandera Leaders Back the Plan Amid Rising Tensions

Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif supported the initiative. He acknowledged that while tribal clashes have reduced, cattle rustling remains a major concern.

“We’ve made progress, but rustling still threatens peace,” Khalif admitted.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja echoed Murkomen’s urgency. He called for unity between residents and security agencies.

“Security is a shared responsibility,” Kanja said. “We must collaborate with locals to protect our communities,” he added.

Chiefs to Join Armed Frontline Against Militants

The push to arm chiefs gained momentum after a chilling incident in March. Armed militants stormed Mangai village in Lamu County, preached to residents, and left unharmed. The event exposed glaring gaps in local security.

Murkomen also revealed plans to recruit and equip more National Police Reservists. He promised incentives and better support to sustain recent gains in volatile regions.

“We’re not just arming chiefs. We’re building a stronger, smarter security network,” Murkomen stated.

Mobility and Technology to Boost Security Forces

After meeting with officers in Mandera, Murkomen pledged to prioritize mobility for security personnel. He said a motor leasing agreement would soon be finalized to enhance response times.

“We’re also investing in modern technology to empower our officers,” he added.

The announcement has stirred mixed emotions. While some applaud the bold move, others worry about the risks of arming civilians.

“It’s a necessary step. Our chiefs face real threats,” said a local elder. “But we must ensure proper training and oversight,” he cautioned.

As December approaches, all eyes are on the government’s next steps. Will this strategy finally bring lasting peace to Kenya’s troubled borders?
