One Student Injured After Fire Razes Dormitory at Otieno Oyoo High School in Kisumu

Fear and panic gripped Otieno Oyoo High School in Kisumu after a massive fire razed a dormitory on Tuesday morning.

The blaze broke out at around 2:00 am, catching most students in their sleep. Heavy smoke filled the dormitory, forcing terrified learners to scramble for safety.

One student sustained critical injuries and was rushed to hospital. Property worth an unknown amount was also reduced to ashes.

Students Struggled to Escape

Witnesses described the horrifying scene of learners fleeing through doors and windows as flames spread quickly.

“Students residing in the dormitory at the time of the incident scrambled to safety through the windows and doors, screaming for help,” a witness said.

Rescue efforts began immediately, with villagers and fellow students joining in to pull out those trapped inside. However, attempts to contain the fire failed as the inferno intensified.

“All their belongings were destroyed. The flames spread so fast, nothing could be saved,” another eyewitness shared.

Cause of Fire Still Unknown

Police confirmed investigations were underway to establish the cause of the fire.

“The exact cause of the inferno is yet to be established. Investigations have been launched,” a police officer noted.

The incident has sparked growing concerns over the rising number of mysterious fires in schools and other institutions across Kenya.

Worrying Trend of Fires in Institutions

This tragedy adds to a string of similar fires reported in recent months.

On August 6, a fire gutted a dormitory at Narok Full Gospel Church, destroying property worth millions. The dormitory sheltered rescued girls, many of whom lost everything as the flames consumed the building.

“The girls made desperate attempts to salvage their belongings before the flames overwhelmed them,” a report read.

In yet another incident on July 7, panic engulfed Onjiko High School in Kisumu after fire destroyed the second floor of a dormitory.

Firefighters from Kisumu Disaster Management contained the blaze before it spread further, but students were left stranded without belongings.

Parents and Community Concerned

The string of fires has unsettled parents and local leaders, who are now demanding urgent safety measures in boarding schools.

The latest Kisumu fire has not only left one student fighting for his life but also reopened painful questions about student safety in Kenya’s schools.
