EACC Arrests 2 DCI Officers Over Alleged Ksh500,000 Murder Case Bribe

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers in Kipkelion, Kericho County, over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe.

The officers are accused of demanding Ksh500,000 from a complainant in exchange for terminating a murder case against him.

EACC said the two officers attached to the DCI Kipkelion Sub-County offices were arrested on Thursday, September 10, following preliminary investigations into the alleged bribery scheme.

The anti-graft agency said its investigations established allegations that the officers had demanded money from the complainant as part of an arrangement to have the murder case terminated.

“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kipkelion Sub-County Offices over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe.”

The commission said the officers were targeted after receiving information concerning the alleged demand.

“They allegedly demanded Ksh500,000 from a complainant in exchange for terminating a murder case against him.”

DCI officers arrested while allegedly receiving money

According to EACC, preliminary investigations prompted the commission to mount an operation targeting the two officers.

The operation was conducted on Thursday and resulted in their arrest while they were allegedly receiving Ksh120,000 from the complainant.

The money was reportedly part of the larger Ksh500,000 amount allegedly demanded by the officers.

The arrest forms part of EACC’s ongoing efforts to investigate corruption allegations involving public officials and prevent the justice system from being compromised through bribery.

Following their arrest, the officers were taken to the EACC South Rift Regional Office, where they were processed as investigations continued.

The commission later released them on cash bail of Ksh30,000, pending completion of the investigations.

“The suspect was processed at South Rift Regional Office and later released on a cash bail of Ksh30,000 pending completion of investigations.”

The two officers remain subjects of investigation and have not been convicted of the allegations against them.

EACC steps up anti-corruption operations

The arrest comes amid increased EACC activity targeting alleged bribery involving officials working within Kenya’s justice and law enforcement institutions.

A day earlier, the commission had announced the arrest of two court officials over separate allegations of demanding and receiving bribes.

The officials included a Court Assistant attached to the Magistrate’s Court in Eldoret and a Court Process Server attached to the Civil Registry at Nakuru Law Courts.

The process server was accused of demanding money from a complainant in exchange for allocating a convenient mention date for a case.

The Court Assistant, meanwhile, was accused of demanding and receiving a Ksh20,000 bribe.

The separate investigations have drawn attention to the risks posed by corruption within institutions responsible for administering justice and enforcing the law.

EACC has repeatedly urged members of the public to report suspected corruption and cooperate with investigations into bribery allegations.

Investigations continue

The latest case involving the two DCI officers remains under investigation as EACC seeks to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged Ksh500,000 demand.

Investigators are also expected to examine the alleged payment of Ksh120,000 and establish whether other individuals were involved in the suspected arrangement.

The officers’ release on cash bail does not amount to an acquittal or determination of the allegations against them.

EACC is expected to complete its investigations before determining whether further legal action will be taken.

The case highlights the importance of maintaining integrity within law enforcement agencies, particularly where officers handle serious criminal investigations such as murder cases.
