Uhuru Kenyatta Urges Gen Zs to Continue with Their Revolution: “Msitishwe”
Ngong – Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on young Kenyans to remain steadfast in their fight for good governance. Speaking passionately at the requiem mass for his first cousin, Kibathi Muigai, Uhuru emphasized that Kenya’s future rests in the hands of the youth.
“The Gen Zs Are Our Future Story”
Addressing the gathering in Ngong on Friday, January 17, Uhuru urged young people to stand firm and defend their rights. He reminded them that their resilience could unlock Kenya’s potential, long hampered by poor leadership.
The Gen Zs are our future story,” he said. “Fight for your rights, not just idling around when what you have sweated for is being grabbed. Fight and ensure you have your rights.”
Uhuru pledged his unwavering support to the younger generation, encouraging them to act boldly and fearlessly. “Don’t be afraid, we are behind you,” he added.

A Subtle Dig at the Current Regime
Uhuru’s remarks come against the backdrop of growing dissatisfaction with President William Ruto’s administration. The government has hinted at plans to regulate social media, a platform that youth-led movements have used to criticize leadership.
On January 16, the Ministry of Interior met with representatives from major social media platforms and telecommunications companies. They discussed strategies to curb the misuse of social media, including disinformation and online abuse.
The government proposed compelling tech giants like Meta and X (formerly Twitter) to establish offices in Nairobi. It also mandated stronger measures by telecom providers to combat criminal activities online.
Social Media as a Tool for Change
Social media has become an essential weapon for Kenyans pushing for change. In June 2024, platforms like X, TikTok, and Facebook were instrumental in organizing mass protests against the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
The proposed bill, laden with new taxes, faced fierce opposition from the public. The protests culminated in citizens breaching Parliament to express their outrage. This pressure forced President Ruto to abandon the bill, a rare victory for grassroots activism.
The Road Ahead
Uhuru’s call for resilience resonates with many young Kenyans. His words highlight the importance of unity and action in confronting societal challenges. As the government tightens its grip on social media, the youth’s fight for their rights and the nation’s future remains critical.
