Tragedy in Kawangware: Several Feared Dead as Inferno Engulfs Four-Storey Building

A tragic fire outbreak has rocked the heart of Kawangware’s Stage 2 area, leaving several feared dead and scores homeless. The Saturday morning blaze gutted a four-storey building, with residents trapped inside, unable to escape the raging flames.

Thick black smoke filled the skies as the fire rapidly spread through shops, kiosks, and homes. Locals watched helplessly, many crying for help as the flames swallowed everything in sight.

“My neighbour is locked inside. Who will help her? She cannot be able to come out,” one distressed resident was heard shouting in a video obtained

Delayed Rescue: Poor Roads Hamper Response

As the fire intensified, residents desperately called emergency services. Unfortunately, fire trucks couldn’t reach the scene due to the narrow and poorly maintained roads.

“We saw the fire brigade trying to get in, but they couldn’t pass. The road is just too tight,” a resident lamented.

The delay sparked outrage from locals, many of whom blamed government inaction and poor urban planning for the recurring tragedies in Nairobi’s informal settlements.

Suspected Electrical Fault to Blame

Preliminary reports suggest the fire was caused by an electrical fault, although authorities have yet to issue an official statement. Residents believe the faulty wiring in congested rental units often sparks fires—fueled by the illegal power connections common in such areas.

This latest tragedy has once again exposed the fragility of informal housing structures and the absence of rapid emergency response systems.

Not the First Tragedy

This isn’t the first time Kawangware has faced such heartbreak. On January 4, 2025, 28 houses in Kawangware 56 went up in flames after an explosion at a gas and petrol refilling shop. Dozens were left homeless, and two sustained serious injuries.

Government Response and Housing Plans

Speaking earlier this week, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku reiterated the government’s push for the Affordable Housing Agenda. He linked the frequent fires in informal settlements to poor infrastructure and unsafe living conditions.

“The affordable housing projects in informal settlements spearheaded by President William Ruto are a sustainable solution to such incidents,” Ruku said.
“We must protect the lives and properties of Kenyans while providing humane and decent living environments.”

Conclusion: A Plea for Change

As smoke continues to rise from the ashes of Kawangware, the community mourns its dead, comforts the injured, and demands real solutions. Once again, Nairobi’s informal settlements are crying out for safety, dignity, and proper planning.
