Chaos Along Thika Road as Residents Protest Koimburi Abduction with Bonfires Outside Mang’u High School

Motorists faced terrifying scenes along Thika Road as angry residents lit bonfires near Mang’u High School and Witeithie.

Videos captured the chaos on Monday morning, showing vehicles dodging flaming tyres. Smoke billowed across the highway, choking visibility and halting traffic from both directions.

“They lit fires in multiple spots. Cars had to weave through the burning tyres,” one eyewitness said

Although the arsonists had already disappeared, the fiery barricades spoke volumes. No group has claimed responsibility so far.

Why Are Residents This Angry?

Though not officially confirmed, the protests appear linked to the alleged abduction and torture of Juja MP George Koimburi.

Social media reports claim the fires were set to show solidarity with the ailing MP, who is currently receiving treatment at Karen Hospital.

Moments before the bonfires, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had visited the injured lawmaker.

“Koimburi was abducted right after attending a church service,” said Kiambu Senator Karung’o Thang’wa.

“His wife was also injured during the scuffle,” he added.

18 Hours of Agony and Silence

Koimburi’s weekend was nothing short of traumatic. On Saturday, he evaded arrest and went into hiding. However, on Sunday, unknown men abducted him outside a church.

“He looked weak and was clearly in pain,” a witness revealed.

The sight shocked residents. Many believe their MP was targeted and tortured.

Unrest Growing, Police Silent

Despite the increasing unrest, authorities have not confirmed the motive behind the highway bonfires. However, the emotional and political weight of Koimburi’s ordeal cannot be ignored.

As the roads burn and tensions soar, the government faces growing pressure to explain what happened to Koimburi—and why.
