Chaos in Mombasa as Fire Guts CBD Buildings, Kenya Navy Rushes to Rescue

Tension ran high in Mombasa on the night of Saturday, May 11, after a raging fire broke out at the Mombasa Water Supply and Sanitation Company (MOWASSCO) offices in the Central Business District.

Smoke filled the air. Sirens wailed. Residents panicked. Yet, help came swiftly.

Emergency Teams Act Fast

According to Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff, emergency response units rushed to the scene within minutes.

“This evening, a fire broke out at the MOWASSCO offices in Mombasa’s Central Business District,” the governor announced on his official X account.
“Thanks to the swift response of our County Emergency Teams, backed by crucial support from the Kenya Navy and Kenya Ports Authority, the fire has been fully contained,” he said.

Three county fire engines battled the flames. They received strong backup from the Kenya Navy, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), and police.

Residents Watch in Fear, But No Lives Lost

Despite the intensity of the fire, no casualties were reported. Governor Abdulswamad confirmed the good news.

“We are grateful that there were no casualties,” he stated.

He assured Mombasa residents that public services would continue without interruption.

“All critical data is securely backed up on cloud-based systems. This unfortunate incident will not disrupt the delivery of services,” the governor emphasized.

Red Cross Steps In

Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross issued an update confirming their involvement.

“The fire was contained by a multi-agency team comprising the County and KPA fire brigades, Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Navy, and Kenya Police,” the statement read.
“No casualties reported. Damage assessment underway.”

Cause of Fire Still a Mystery

At the moment, authorities have not established the cause of the fire. Additionally, the value of damaged property remains unknown. However, an investigation has already begun.

Similar Blaze Hits Murang’a School

Shockingly, just hours earlier, another fire had ravaged a newly built dormitory at Igikiro Boys High School in Murang’a. Fortunately, no students were inside at the time.

Police have detained three students and a boda boda rider suspected of involvement in the Murang’a incident.

Hope Amid the Flames

Despite the destruction, Governor Abdulswamad remained hopeful.

“We will rebuild. We will not be shaken. Service to the people continues,” he declared.

As investigations proceed, the people of Mombasa wait for answers, but are grateful lives were saved.
