The verdict, delivered by Justice Stella Rutto on April 9, marks a crucial win for Lyomu, who had been in a legal standoff with the media house since his exit in June 2023.
A Debt That Refused to Die
Initially, in October 2024, the court ordered Standard Group to pay Lyomu Ksh38.3 million. This included salary arrears, six months’ salary in lieu of notice, unpaid leave, and a March 2023 bonus.
However, things didn’t go according to plan.
By December 2024, the company had not honored the court-sanctioned consent agreement. As of March 2025, Lyomu had only received Ksh4.5 million out of the expected Ksh5.25 million.
The court has now demanded that Standard Group pays the remaining Ksh34 million in 12 equal monthly instalments.
“That the Respondent pays the balance of the judgment amount in twelve (12) equal consecutive instalments,” the court stated. “The first instalment is payable on or before May 5, 2025. The rest must follow by the 5th day of every month.”
