Raila’s Nephew Jaoko Odinga Appointed Special Advisor in President Ruto’s Office

In a move that stunned many and stirred national dialogue, Jaoko Oburu Odinga, son of Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga and nephew to Raila Odinga, has officially joined President William Ruto’s inner circle. On Tuesday, April 22, the President appointed Jaoko as Special Advisor for Economic Empowerment and Sustainable Livelihoods.

The announcement ignited reactions across political divides. Kenyans are watching closely as the country inches toward an era of greater political collaboration and inclusive development

Grateful to Ruto and Raila

Shortly after the news broke, Jaoko took to X (formerly Twitter) to express deep gratitude.

“I wish to take this opportunity to give special thanks to H.E President William Samoei Ruto for granting me an opportunity to serve Kenyans by appointing me to serve in the capacity of Special Advisor, Economic Empowerment, and Sustainable Livelihoods. Thank you, Your Excellency,” he wrote.

He didn’t stop there. In a rare show of bipartisan gratitude, Jaoko also honored his uncle, Raila Odinga.

“Thanks also go to the Right Honourable Prime Minister, Hon. Raila Odinga, for showing his faith in me and for creating a conducive environment for Kenyans from all walks of life to work together for our beloved country, Kenya, in nation building. Thank you, Sir. God bless Kenya,” he added.

Bridging Divides, Empowering Millions

Jaoko’s new role is more than symbolic. It places him at the heart of the government’s mission to reduce poverty, create jobs, and empower marginalized communities.

His key responsibilities include advising the President on strategies to improve economic inclusion. He will guide national programs focused on youth and women empowerment, access to microloans, and the growth of community-based enterprises.

Moreover, he will coordinate efforts with critical ministries like Treasury, Labour, and Trade, alongside county governments and development partners. These efforts aim to boost entrepreneurship and promote sustainable livelihoods nationwide.

A Surprising but Hopeful Turn

This appointment marks a hopeful shift in Kenya’s political landscape. It shows that unity and service can overcome long-standing divisions. Jaoko’s presence in the Executive Office of the President brings together the legacies of both Ruto and Raila, creating a unique opportunity for meaningful change.

Kenyans now await the results, but the message is clear—collaboration is the new path forward.
