Nyandarua CCIO Killed, MCA Injured in Horrific 9-Vehicle Crash on Nairobi-Nakuru Highway
The fatal accident occurred on Monday, June 15, at the Karai area near Naivasha after a truck reportedly suffered brake failure and ploughed into several vehicles, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving nine vehicles.
According to preliminary reports, the lorry was travelling towards Nakuru when the driver allegedly lost control after the vehicle’s braking system malfunctioned. Witnesses said the truck rammed into multiple vehicles along the highway before veering off the road and coming to a stop in a ditch.
The impact of the collision left a trail of destruction, with mangled vehicles scattered across the road and emergency responders scrambling to rescue trapped victims.

Police confirmed that Nyandarua CCIO John Rioba died instantly at the scene due to the severity of the crash.
His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the National Police Service and the wider security fraternity, with colleagues describing him as a dedicated officer who served the country with distinction.
Several other occupants of the affected vehicles sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Authorities had not immediately released details regarding her condition, although sources indicated that she was receiving medical attention and remained under observation.
“The truck appeared to be moving at high speed before it suddenly hit the vehicles ahead. Everything happened very fast. We heard loud bangs and saw vehicles crashing into one another,” said one eyewitness.
The accident caused a major traffic snarl-up along one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors, with motorists stranded for several hours as rescue operations and vehicle recovery efforts continued.
Police officers, Kenya National Highways Authority personnel, and emergency response teams were deployed to manage the situation and restore traffic flow.

Investigators have since launched inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with particular focus on the alleged mechanical failure of the truck involved.
The Karai tragedy is the latest in a series of deadly road accidents that have raised fresh concerns about safety standards on Kenyan roads.
Just a week ago, eight people lost their lives while 27 others sustained serious injuries in a grisly accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway involving a truck, a passenger bus, two saloon cars, and a motorcycle.
In that incident, police reported that several victims died instantly, while survivors were rushed to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
The latest crash also comes only days after another fatal collision along the Webuye-Bungoma Highway.
The recurring accidents have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, enhanced vehicle inspection measures, and improved driver training to curb the rising number of fatalities on Kenyan roads.
As investigations continue, leaders, security officers, and members of the public have expressed condolences to the family of the late John Rioba, whose death marks another painful loss in the country’s ongoing battle against road carnage.

For many Kenyans, the tragedy serves as yet another stark reminder of the urgent need for stronger road safety measures to protect lives on the nation’s highways.
