Wetang’ula Urges Tougher Laws After Webuye Accident Claims 15 Lives
The accident, which occurred on the morning of March 10, involved a truck that reportedly lost control before crashing into multiple vehicles along the busy junction, causing a devastating chain collision.
Speaking on Wednesday, March 11, after visiting families of the victims and touring the accident scene, Wetang’ula said the rising number of fatal road accidents in the country demands urgent legislative action to protect road users.
“To Members of Parliament, we must tighten the rules and regulations governing the transport sector,” Wetang’ula stated, urging lawmakers to strengthen road safety frameworks and hold reckless drivers accountable.
According to police reports, the crash involved a truck that rammed into several vehicles, including a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and a motorcycle, popularly known as a boda boda
The National Transport and Safety Authority has previously warned about the dangers posed by reckless driving, overloaded vehicles, and poor road discipline across major highways.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the truck appeared to veer off its lane before crashing into the matatu and the motorcycle, triggering panic and chaos among motorists and pedestrians.
The impact of the crash was devastating, leaving bodies lying on the road as rescuers, motorists, and local residents rushed to assist victims before emergency responders arrived.
Images and videos that circulated widely on social media showed the heavily damaged matatu and debris scattered across the road, while emergency teams worked to rescue survivors trapped inside the wreckage.
During his visit to Webuye County Referral Hospital, Wetang’ula also facilitated the transfer of two critically injured victims to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised medical care.
The Speaker further challenged government agencies responsible for road safety enforcement to intensify their efforts in addressing the growing number of accidents across the country.
“The National Transport and Safety Authority must act swiftly to ensure such dangerous drivers are removed from our roads. Our courts must also take the growing recklessness on our roads seriously; those who endanger lives must face the full force of the law,” he said.
Meanwhile, leaders and community members in the area have begun organising burial arrangements for the victims as families continue to mourn their loved ones.
A funeral committee has already been formed to coordinate support for the affected families. The committee includes Marthin Wanyonyi Pepela, Catherine Wambilianga, Janepher Chemtai Mbatiany, and several local leaders.
According to Wetang’ula, a community fundraiser has been scheduled for Sunday, March 15, to help support the families affected by the tragedy.
The crash has once again reignited national debate about road safety in Kenya, with many leaders calling for stronger enforcement of traffic laws, stricter penalties for dangerous driving, and better road safety awareness campaigns.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies on the country’s roads
